Highlights & Details:

Description of the Integrative Sleep Medicine (ISM) Program

The goal of the ISM Program is to provide you with an intensive rehabilitation of your sleep that gives you the tools to maintain a healthy sleep pattern. The program consists of four sessions with Dr. Rotman over six weeks. This allows adequate time for evaluation, possible additional studies, patient education, behavior modification and feedback, herbal treatments and four acupuncture sessions.

Pre-Program Preparation:

Prior to the initial visit you will be asked to complete a detailed medical questionnaire.

Session #1:
Your first session will last approximately two hours. It begins with a few brief surveys to measure baseline sleep impairment and other associated problems. Next will be an approximately one hour session with Dr. Barry Rotman that focuses in depth on your sleeping problem. After analyzing your sleep history, treatments and associated health issues, Dr. Rotman will develop a personalized treatment plan and review it with you.
The session will conclude with 30-45 minutes of acupuncture with Dr. Rotman. To prepare for your next session, you will receive a customized list of recommendations that may involve Chinese herbal remedies, proposed lifestyle modifications and reading materials.

Sessions #2 and #3:
These follow-up sessions with Dr. Rotman - each lasting approximately one hour - will assess progress to date and address any problems and questions. You may receive an updated list of tasks to cover at home or a sample of a different herbal preparation. Each session will conclude with therapeutic acupuncture.

Session #4:
The final session follows the format of earlier sessions and will also include a few brief surveys of sleep quality to compare with your baseline measurements. You will receive a summary of the results and recommendations for continuing herb therapy and lifestyle modifications. Dr Rotman will compose a letter to your primary care physician describing your experience with the ISM Program and include any suggestions for future medical treatments.

Follow-up:
Should you desire to continue the program for longer than six weeks or need a few “tune-up” sessions at a later date, individual sessions are available for an additional fee. A final set of brief questionnaires will be mailed to you six months after completion of the program asking you to describe the longer term effects of the ISM Program.

FAQs:

Q: What is Integrative Sleep Medicine?

A: The term “Integrative” means combining the best of East and West. Following the best practices of Western Medicine and carefully selecting alternative medical therapies that together can be more effective than either form of medicine alone. Sleep problems can be very challenging to solve. Why not use all of the best therapies!

Q: I am afraid of acupuncture and I might not want to take Chinese herbs.

A: First of all, acupuncture treatment is safe and very relaxing. The ISM Program uses only California manufactured herbal preparations which are scientifically assayed for purity. The ISM Program can be very effective without the use of acupuncture or Chinese herbs, but so much more powerful with them.

Q: Is there a faster method to improve my sleep?

A: Unfortunately, complex problems often require complex solutions. Long term problems such as sleep impairment are rarely amenable to a “quick fix”. However, investing six weeks of effort can potentially lead to a lifetime of benefit.

Q: Why should I try the Integrative Sleep Medicine Program?

A: The ISM Program was developed my Dr. Barry Rotman. He is a board certified Internal Medicine physician with almost 20 years of experience treating patients. He has studied aspects of Chinese medicine and incorporates them into his medical practice. The Integrative Sleep Medicine Program is a safe, innovative, new approach for those who are frustrated with their sleep.
