Sleep and Your Eyes

Everyday brings new discoveries about how important our circadian rhythms are for our health. This recent New York Times article describes the work of  two physician researchers at the University of Kansas School of Medicine that links the aging of the eye’s lens with circadian rhythm disruption and a greater risk of a wide range of illnesses including cancer and heart disease.

As our lenses age they turn yellow which filters out the healthful blue part of the light spectrum, that is necessary to regulate our circadian rhythms. What can be done? We can re-examine the assumption that natural sunlight is always hazardous to our eyes. Too much exposure to the ultraviolet spectrum of sunlight has been linked to a greater risk of cataract formation. However, it now appears that not enough blue spectrum light may be getting through older eye lenses. The answer probably relies on moderation. Perhaps more exposure to sunlight through windows, skylights and less use of sunglasses may provide better circadian rhythm function for us as we age.  Read more here….

BE THE FIRST KID ON THE BLOCK TO GET THE 2011 FLU VACCINE!

For the first time ever in my career, I have received my entire allotment of influenza vaccine by the first week of August. After countless seasons of delays, shortages and confusion — the system finally worked!  The current Center for Disease Control recommendation calls for everyone over the age of 6 months to receive the vaccine. They have done away with the concept of "high risk" groups. People of all ages benefit from influenza vaccination. As I always say "prevention is better than treatment!" So now is the time to contact the office to come in for your flu shot!  Call us @ 925-296-9228.

US Military Gets the Point

The horrors and destruction of war has often led to implementing medical innovations that can be life saving and of great benefit to society at large. This recent article from the Wall Street Journal illustrates this trend. The ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afganistan have led to thousands of combatants receiving traumatic brain injuries and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Both illnesses are not well treated by traditional Western Medicine. Unfortunately, we do not have good medicines for healing the brain or effectively alleviating the symptoms of these syndromes. As this article discusses, military doctors are using acupuncture to safely and effectively treat these injured soldiers.

The successful use of acupuncture in the military illustrates another point that I am fond of discussing: how healthcare is financed dictates how it is practiced. Acupuncture is not paid for by Medicare, Medicaid or the vast majority of private insurance policies. Consequently, acupuncture is underutilized in our country. Both the Department of Defense and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs provide healthcare outside of an insurance model. If it works, they provide it. Something to think about.
